Official Statement - The Republican Party, A Culture of Corruption
FAYETTEVILLE, September 5, 2018 –
“Today’s sentencing makes it abundantly clear that the Republican Party is rife with corruption. The decay starts at the top and goes beyond our county. Donald Trump’s campaign chairman has been convicted in Federal Court, his personal attorney who negotiated hush money for mistress Stormy Daniels, has pleaded guilty to eight criminal charges including two campaign finance charges. Several others close to his campaign have been indicated for a myriad of misdeeds. When it comes to the Republican Party of Arkansas, there is almost too much material for this release.
Close to home, we ask the following question. How much taxpayer money was given to Ecclesia College and how much found its way back to the pockets of the Republican legislators that directed it there? Sen. Jon Woods will be sentenced today in federal court for 15 counts of fraud for his collusion in a kickback scheme involving Oren Paris, III then president of Ecclesia College, who will be sentenced later this month.
Your eyebrows should be raised too. Republicans do not deserve the support of the voters in Washington County. Our recommendation is to vote them out at every level and support candidates who pledge to clean up government with ethical leadership and professionalism.” |

Official Statement regarding 287g, SCOMM and Immigration Policy

"Democratic Party of Washington County welcomes an open and informative conversation about issues our immigrants are facing, regardless of legal status, and ways to effectively and productively offer our support. 287g, SCOMM, and immigration policy involve extremely complicated legal issues and are, frankly, topics with which many of our members have not had much experience.
The Democratic Party of Washington County is extremely interested in protecting our DREAMERS and making sure that they are fairly treated, as stated in our party platform. It is our sincere belief that we have an obligation to support law abiding folks, regardless of immigration status, to protect our DREAMERS, to ensure that there is no racial profiling, and to support increased services and education to make sure undocumented victims of crime report those crimes without fear of deportation. We believe those things can be addressed while still offering our support to those who put themselves in harm’s way to protect our communities.
The County Party has gladly invited members of the Arkansas Justice Collective to present on this topic to our body on Monday, August 21st.
We welcome the opportunity to hear the facts, statistics, and information gathered so the members and leadership of the Democratic Party of Washington County may make an informed assessment of future action or involvement."

Post-Election Message from our Chair

Like many of you, I did not leave bed for two days and have been listless since Tuesday.
For more than half the nation and much of the world, we are in a period of mourning. Some have criticized others for taking too much time to get over the outcome of the Election. And that pain is certainly not something to be pushed away, minimized or rushed through. For me, each day gets better and I appreciate the numerous messages and phone calls. It helps not feeling alone in our pain.
Some finality (and a slight lifting of spirits) came as we packed up headquarters on Saturday morning. A new volunteer joined us as we hauled everything to storage. She reached out to me via Facebook Friday evening, she was distraught and feeling like she had to do "something". She was asking, like so many others, "what's next?" and "what can I do?".
It's time for progressives, liberals and democrats to think differently about how we strategically engage people in our party. It will likely take a lot of time and resources (and might be uncomfortable at times) but we're ready for the challenge.
Our first chance to start thinking differently will be at our November meeting, which will be held next week, Monday, November 21st at Homewood Suites in Fayetteville. I encourage you to bring a friend, hell bring everyone you know. We'll start at 6pm with social time and begin the official meeting at 6:30pm. Our website has all the details.
Post-Election there are so many people to appreciate. You risk getting in trouble if you list names, so let me say this; Thank you to our candidates, volunteers and donors for your hours of hard work and dedication to the Democratic Party of Washington County.
Democratically Yours,
Tyler B. Clark

GOP Judge Candidate running for which office?
Last week, we released a new social media campaign pointing out the fact that the GOP nominee for County Judge has previously announced that he intends on running for Secretary of State in 2018.
We believe that the residents of Washington County deserve a full-time County Judge, not a perpetual candidate for higher office.
Download the graphic below and help us make it viral.

#VoterRegistrationDay

In 2008, 6 million Americans didn’t vote because they missed a registration deadline or didn’t know how to register. In 2016, we want to make sure no one is left out. On Tuesday, September 27, 2016, volunteers, celebrities, and organizations from all over the country will “hit the streets” for National Voter Registration Day. This single day of coordinated field, technology and media efforts will create pervasive awareness of voter registration opportunities–allowing us to reach tens of thousands of voters who we could not reach otherwise.
We need volunteers who will hit NWA and register voters in coordinate areas.
We will provide, breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for volunteers.
Sign up and commit to help us move to victory.

Democratic Party of Arkansas Fisher-Shackelford Dinner

Democratic Party of Arkansas Announces Details of the 2016 Jimmie Lou Fisher – Lottie Shackelford Dinner Featuring Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro
(LITTLE ROCK) The Democratic Party of Arkansas is proud to announce Congressman Joaquin Castro (D-TX) will be the special guest speaker at the 2016 Jimmie Lou Fisher – Lottie Shackelford Dinner. This annual event will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2016, in the Grand Hall of the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum in Little Rock. Tickets are $85 each and available for purchase online.
The 2016 honorees will be announced on or before February 1, 2016.
Joaquin Castro was born in San Antonio, Texas. A second generation Mexican American, Joaquin has worked hard to seize the opportunities created by the sacrifices of his grandmother, Victoria, who came to Texas as a young orphan, and often worked two and three jobs at a time to be able to give her daughter (Joaquin’s mother, Rosie) and her grandchildren a better chance in life.
Joaquin Castro graduated with honors from Stanford University, attended Harvard Law School, and served five terms in the Texas legislature where he was at the forefront in proposing forward-thinking legislative reforms in the areas of mental health, teen pregnancy, and juvenile justice. In 2012, Joaquin was elected to serve in the U.S House of Representatives as representative of Texas Congressional District 20, which is the main district for San Antonio and Bexar County where he serves on the House Armed Services Committee, as well as the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He has also been named Chief Deputy Whip for House Democrats, charged with assisting in rallying members around important legislation.
Joaquin is married to Anna Flores, and they have one daughter, Andrea Elena Castro. Joaquin’s identical twin brother, Julián Castro, served three terms as Mayor of San Antonio until President Barack Obama appointed him as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in 2014.
Joaquin’s respect for public service developed at a young age and was deeply influenced by his parents’ involvement in political movements and civic causes. His father, a retired teacher, and his mother, a renowned community activist, instilled in him a deep appreciation for the democratic process and the importance of community service.

Event Background
This annual Democratic Women’s Dinner highlights issues that matter to Arkansas women. Jimmie Lou Fisher and Lottie Shackelford have blazed the trail for Arkansas women. Fisher was the second woman elected to a constitutional office in Arkansas and served 22 years as State Treasurer. She was the first woman to run for Governor of Arkansas as a major party nominee.
Lottie Shackelford was the first woman elected Mayor of Little Rock, served as Chair of the Democratic Party of Arkansas and is the longest serving Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee. President Clinton appointed her to the Board of Directors of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, making her the first African American woman to serve in that capacity. In 2014, Shackelford was elected chair of the National Democratic Women’s Caucus. Both women have been life-long activists for the Democratic Party.
In keeping with the legacies of the dinner’s namesakes, this evening honors women who have dedicated their lives and careers to public service in Arkansas and have helped advance Democratic ideals and policy.
Previous honorees include the Honorable Jimmie Lou Fisher, the Honorable Lottie Shackelford, Mary Louise Williams, the Honorable Kathy Webb, and the Honorable Johnnie Roebuck.

Remembering Senator Dale Bumpers

We are still mourning the lost of our beloved friend, former Arkansas Governor and U.S. Senator, the Honorable Dale Bumpers. Mr. Bumpers passed away surrounded by his family in Little Rock on January 1st. Mr. Bumpers served as the 38th governor of Arkansas from 1971 to 1975, and represented The Natural State in the U.S. Senate from 1975 to 1999.

NWA for Bernie, Wednesday, July 29th

You're invited to a gathering for an organizing meeting for Bernie Sanders' 2016 Presidential Campaign! Sanders himself will be broadcasting across the country to events like ours informing attendees what his campaign is all about and what we can do to help.
Bernie is up against candidates whose campaigns are backed by banks, corporations, and media so the only way to make this campaign successful is to build it from the ground up.
Bernie's live stream starts at 6:30 PM, but plan on arriving early so we can all get a chance to introduce ourselves. We will be accepting donations that will go directly towards the Sanders Campaign.
All ages welcome until the after party begins (roughly 8 PM) at which point it becomes 18+
Catering from Woodstone Craft Pizza and live music from Teenagers & Jeh-sea Wells. More information on Facebook

Bryant Appointed JP

Governor Beebe appointed Diane Bryant to replace resigning Justice of the Peace Mary Ann Spears. Spears, a republican from JP District 10 stepped down earlier this summer. Diane is a longtime Farmington resident, a former school librarian and is the former President of Washington County Democratic Women. The incoming JP was sworn in earlier this week by Judge Mark Lindsey. Precinct Chair Opportunity

Arkansas Republicans have the advantage of out-of-state billionaires and special interest groups funding their campaigns, Arkansas Democrats must find a new way of connecting with voters on a personal level. Across the country, county Democratic committees have implemented “Precinct Chair” programs that have served as the backbone of Democratic organizing. The Washington County Democratic Party is implementing such a program that will allow us to both grow our Party and get Democrats elected in 2014. View additional information and the application HERE. Brandon Maxey is the project lead for this program. E-mail him for more information.
JJ After Dark

The Young Democrats of Arkansas are proud to invite you to our annual After Dark celebration following the Democratic Party of Arkansas's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner. This year, we’re very excited to announce that our new leadership has secured Revolution Music Room as our venue, just down the street from the Statehouse Convention Center where the JJ Dinner is being held. There will be live music; stay tuned to this page to see who will be playing.
There will be good music, good drinks, and good times, and it promises to be a fantastic party. We hope to see you there! Tickets to the event will be $10, which may be paid at the door or at the link below, and comes with a drink ticket for the first 100 attendees!
We hope to see you at JJAD. In the meantime, we’re working hard to reach our fundraising goal, and we need your help. Your contribution will help us pay our basic expenses so we can focus on our ambitious voter registration, canvassing, and phone banking goals. The Young Democrats is the most reliable source of volunteer and grassroots organization for candidates across Arkansas. We provide infrastructure, resources, training, and support to Democratic campaigns, along with an invaluable workforce of volunteers, interns, and staff at little to no cost. In off years like this one, we spend our time and resources carefully on building new chapters and recruiting new members so we can continue to give Democrats the energy and boots-on-the-ground presence they need to succeed.
We are happy to accept contributions of any size, and have several levels of sponsorship for this event. If you're interested, or have any questions, please contact our President, Ezra Smith, at (479) 387-4978. The sooner you contribute, the sooner we can get to work, and we thank you for making what we do possible. Together, we can make sure that the next generation of leaders are more engaged than ever in leading Arkansas forward!
